Why grind at all

When every fragment is roughly the same size, the combustion front travels through the bowl at a predictable rate instead of racing through loose fluff and stalling on dense clumps. Flavor improves because nothing scorches while the rest is warming up, and draw resistance stabilises because airflow is not fighting its way around pebbles.
Ground flower also exposes more surface area per gram, so active compounds volatilise faster and more completely at the same temperature. The same quantity goes further — a small but steady gain over months of use.
2-, 3-, and 4-piece grinders: what changes between them
All three share the same basic mechanism — two halves of interlocking teeth that shear flower as they rotate — but each added piece solves a problem the previous layout could not.
2-piece: the stripped-back starter
A 2-piece is the simplest form of the tool. Two halves, one set of interlocking teeth, magnetic or friction-fit. Flower in, twist ten to fifteen times, open the lid, scoop out by hand.
The appeal is simplicity. Fewer parts, lower cost, smaller profile. A decent aluminum 2-piece runs €8–€15 and works fine for anyone who grinds once a week and rolls straight from the chamber.
Drawbacks show up with regular use. No storage, so whatever you grind has to be used straight away. No sieve, so kief sticks to the teeth. Consistency depends entirely on how long you turn — over-grind and you get dust, under-grind and you get shreds.
3-piece: storage without the sieve
A 3-piece adds a collection chamber below the teeth. The floor of the grinding chamber has holes — typically 4–6 mm — that let the ground material drop through as soon as it is fine enough to pass. Once the chamber is full or a session is done, the middle section unscrews and the flower pours out clean.
Two practical wins come from this layout. The grinding chamber stays less cluttered, so the teeth keep biting into whole flower rather than pulverising the same material twice. The output is naturally self-sorting — only particles small enough to fall through the holes end up in storage, so consistency improves automatically.
The missing piece is kief recovery. Trichomes fall through with the flower and mix back in rather than collecting separately. Fine for most users; for anyone who wants to accumulate kief for pressing or topping bowls, a 3-piece leaves it on the table.
4-piece: the standard for a reason
A 4 piece grinder adds one more layer: a fine mesh screen between the collection chamber and a bottom chamber — the kief catcher. As ground flower sits in the middle, trichome heads sift through the screen under gravity and gentle movement, accumulating below over days and weeks.
The mesh is usually stainless steel at 100–150 microns. Coarser screens let too much plant matter through; finer ones clog quickly. After a few weeks of regular grinding, the bottom chamber holds a light layer of pale kief, easy to scoop with the small scraper that most 4-piece sets include.
The extra chamber is the single biggest quality-of-life upgrade in the category. Sorted flower in the middle, bonus collection at the bottom, teeth stay cleaner. A 4-piece costs €20–€60 depending on build, and for most users it is the right answer first time.
Materials: honest pros and cons
CNC aluminum, aerospace grade 6061. The standard for serious grinders. 6061 is a magnesium-silicon alloy originally developed for aircraft structural parts — rigid, light, corrosion-resistant, machinable to tight tolerances. A CNC aluminum grinder has teeth cut by computer-controlled mills, so every tooth is identical and the threading spins freely without wobble. Expect a lifetime of regular use if the piece is looked after.
Cheap alloy (unmarked metal). Looks similar in a photograph, costs half as much. Typically a soft zinc-aluminum blend that dents under hand pressure and flakes on the anodised coating within months. Teeth go blunt quickly because the alloy is too soft to hold an edge. Avoid anything that does not specify 6061 or "aircraft-grade aluminum."
Plastic. Acrylic grinders are the cheapest option, often given away as promotional items. Teeth shear off, static builds up so ground flower clings to everything, and plastic threads strip the first time a sticky bud forces resistance. Acceptable as an emergency backup, nothing more.
Wood. Handsome on a shelf, a compromise in practice. Metal pins embedded in wood work fine, but the porous surface absorbs oils and cleaning becomes awkward — no freezer method, no isopropyl bath. Fine for occasional use and display, not a daily driver.
Tooth geometry and size
Two specs decide how the grinder actually behaves in the hand: the shape of the teeth (what the grind looks like) and the diameter of the body (how much it holds and how it sits). Both matter more than the price tag.
Diamond-cut, sharkfin, and windmill teeth
Tooth shape determines what kind of grind the tool produces, and this detail is quietly one of the most important.
Diamond-cut teeth are four-sided pyramids — the classic profile. They bite down into the flower and shear laterally as the halves rotate, producing a uniform medium-coarse grind suitable for joints, pipes, and bowls alike. The default, because it is versatile and forgiving of technique.
Sharkfin teeth are curved, angled blades that slice rather than shear. They pull material toward the centre as they rotate, producing a fluffier grind with less compression — useful for vaporisers, where dense clumps slow airflow and cause uneven heating.
A third pattern worth knowing is the windmill or nautilus layout — teeth offset in a spiral to encourage even distribution. Common in premium grinders, and produces a particularly consistent output.
Sizes: 40, 50, 55, 63 mm
Grinder diameter is measured across the widest part of the body. Four sizes cover most use cases:
- 40 mm (mini). Pocket-friendly, one-gram capacity. Best for travel or a second grinder. Too small for regular home use.
- 50 mm (small/medium). The most common size for solo users — 2–3 grams capacity, balanced in the hand, works for joints and bowls alike.
- 55 mm (medium). Same ergonomics as a 50 but noticeably more chamber volume, closer to 4 grams. A good default when the choice is not obvious.
- 63 mm (large). Two-handed, 5–7 grams capacity. Built for group sessions or pre-rolling a week at once. Overkill for daily solo use.
If in doubt, 50 or 55 mm. The jump from 40 to 50 is a big ergonomic improvement; the jump from 55 to 63 mostly just adds weight.
Details that separate good from premium
A few specifics explain why two grinders that look identical in a photograph can cost €20 and €60 respectively.
Magnetic lid. A strong neodymium magnet keeps the lid seated during rotation so material does not escape. Cheap grinders either omit this or use weak magnets that slip once the piece gets sticky. A proper magnet has a noticeable pull when you hold the two halves near each other.
Threading. Precision threads let the chambers spin apart with one quick twist. Poor threads bind, cross-thread, and eventually strip. Quick test: unscrew and re-screw the chambers empty. Any grit, wobble, or effort means the threading is not right.
Screen quality. On 4-piece grinders, the mesh determines how cleanly kief separates from plant matter. Look for a flat, tightly woven stainless steel mesh that is replaceable. Some premium models ship with a spare screen — a signal that the piece is built to last long enough to need one.
Tooth finish. Run a fingertip over the teeth (carefully). Tips should feel crisp, uniform in height, evenly spaced. Rounded tips or inconsistent heights mean worn tooling at the factory or soft metal.
Price difference usually comes down to all four together: precise CNC cuts, real 6061 aluminum, neodymium magnet, replaceable stainless screen. A €60 grinder has all of these. A €15 grinder has none, and the gap in daily use is larger than the price difference suggests.
Cleaning: freezer method and isopropyl
A grinder builds up sticky residue the same way a bong does — trichomes, plant oils, and fine dust in the threads and between the teeth. Cleaning is quick if done before it hardens into lacquer.
The freezer method is the gentle option. Disassemble, leave in the freezer 30–60 minutes, then tap the pieces over a clean surface and brush with a dry toothbrush. Resin turns brittle and flakes off. Safe for any material, no chemicals required.
For heavier buildup, isopropyl alcohol at 91% or higher dissolves the residue. Soak metal parts for 20–30 minutes, rinse with warm water, dry fully before reassembling. Do not soak the magnetic lid — repeated isopropyl can weaken the magnet's housing. Never use the dishwasher.
Common buying mistakes
The same mistakes come up again and again:
- Thin body walls. Cheap grinders skimp on metal thickness. The tell is weight — a real 6061 aluminum 50 mm grinder weighs 180–220 grams. Anything noticeably lighter is hollow-cored or low-density alloy.
- Plastic threading. Some hybrids have a metal body but plastic threads at the seam. They fail within months. Threading should be metal on metal throughout.
- Poorly-cut teeth. Uneven heights, rounded tips, visible burrs. Works at first, loses bite as edges round off, by month six it is crushing flower rather than cutting it.
- Oversized for the use case. 63 mm looks impressive, but grinding one gram in a large chamber means flower bounces around loose and grinds unevenly.
- No replaceable screen on a 4-piece. Screens clog eventually. If the mesh is glued in, the grinder is disposable once it fails.
